WELCOME

We are pleased to present the Fall 2002 newsletter for CPI Central Asia, informing our users of the latest developments on the website.

The Conflict Prevention Initiative (CPI) internet portal on Central Asia was launched by the Harvard Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research (HPCR) in December 2001 to offer reliable and updated news and analysis on the political, humanitarian and security situation in the region.

Since its launch, the portal has attracted over 1,500 users, including policy makers, representatives of the United Nations, local and international NGOs and the academic community. The portal also hosted the first ever international e-conference on Afghanistan. The final report can be found in both English and Dari on the portal (see below).

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK

As we are approaching the end of our first year online, we welcome your thoughts and feedback on how we can best develop and improve the Central Asia Portal so that it continues to be a useful resource for all users. We would appreciate if you would take a couple minutes to respond to the questions below. Please send your comments to cpihpcr@hsph.harvard.edu
  • What is your most favorite and least favorite part of the portal?
  • Which areas of the portal do you think need to be further developed or expanded?
  • Do you have ideas on how the portal can further contribute to the field of conflict prevention?

LATEST HIGHLIGHTS

Law and Legal reform in Central Asia
A new category has recently been added to the "Issues" section of the Portal, focusing on law and legal reform in Central Asia. "Law" has been subdivided into six categories for easier access to specific information: General Information/Portals, Islamic Law, Constitutions/Legislation, Customary Law/Tribal Law, Legal Reforms, and Relevant News. New links are regularly being added, and currently include full-text constitutions, access to other law-focused portals, available legislation, and resources on Islamic law. Additionally, the "Legal Reform" section includes recent academic and policy analyses of legal reform issues, as well links to information on projects undertaken by groups such as the World Bank and the OSCE.

The Law section can be viewed in Issues at: http://www.preventconflict.org/portal/centralasia/issuelist.php?i=2069&r=2001&v=

(Please note that information relating to treaties can be found in the resources section)
