Intergroup Relations: Religion

Religion plays an essential role in the violent conflicts that plague Indonesia today. These conflicts include an inter-religious clash between Christians and Muslims, centered in Maluku; and intra-religious clashes between opposing Muslim groups. Wahid was a moderate Muslim cleric, and as such was seen as a compromise candidate. The new President, Megawati Sukarnoputri, is secular, but her Vice President is the Muslim leader Hamzah Haz.
