| Executive Summary |
|
|
Java is Indonesia's most densely populated island, home to the capital city, Jakarta, and the center of manufacturing and industry for the republic. Although there are three major ethnic groups in Java, two-thirds of the population is Javanese, the majority of whom are Muslim. Java has been spared the widespread ethnic and religious strife that has wracked many regions in Indonesia. However, there are several major human security issues confronting Java today. Amongst the concerns are poverty, air and water pollution, the rise of HIV, over-crowding, child labor, and prostitution in urban areas. Further, throughout Java, illegal logging threatens the sustainability of forests and agricultural land. An additional threat to human security in Java has been the rise of Islamic extremist groups there. Java has been used as a base and training ground for several Islamic extremist groups, including Laskar Jihad, which has engaged in religious conflict in Sulawesi and Maluku. Other extremist groups have terrorized gambling halls, nightclubs, and other places that they accuse of un-Islamic practices.
