We are pleased to present the first newsletter of the Conflict Prevention Initiative (CPI) Nepal portal. This newsletter serves to inform our users of the latest developments of CPI and the Nepal portal.

A new CPI Nepal portal was launched in November 2001 to offer users reliable and updated articles and resources on the political and social situation in Nepal. The new Nepal portal can now be found at: http://www.preventconflict.org/portal/nepal
The portal builds on the original CPI Nepal database, first launched by the Harvard Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research (HPCR) in January 2001. This searchable database was created to offer links to articles on the political, humanitarian and security situation in the country as well as links to organizations working in these areas.
In addition to the database, the new Nepal portal gives users access to relevant international and local news sources, Internet resources on Nepal, maps and a timeline of events in Nepal since January 2001, prepared by CPI. The final report of the February 2001 CPI E-conference, "Setting Priorities for Preventive Action in Nepal" can also be found on the portal.

Issues
The Issues database has been recently updated and now includes over 300 articles on topics such as governance, peace building, economic and social development, human rights and humanitarian assistance in Nepal. As of December 2001, we have expanded our coverage of issues to include articles on food security, the trafficking of children and privatization. Since the state of emergency was declared in November 2001, we have gathered information on the Maoist insurgency from a range of local, regional, and international sources to provide broader coverage of the escalating conflict. A significant body of documents by the Government of Nepal has also been recently included in the Issues database.
Organizations
The Organizations database includes over one hundred links to NGOs, inter-governmental organizations, academic institutions and research institutes primarily related to conflict prevention and human security in Nepal. The organizations database allows users to search by type of organization, region or topic. If you wish to send us the contact information of your organizations. Please contact us at: cpi_hpcr@hsph.harvard.edu
Resources
The Resources section of the portal includes easy access to links to general information on Nepal, libraries and journals, and other portals focusing on Nepal and on conflict prevention. Resource links are organized by topic and subheadings including disaster relief, development organizations, economics, human rights, and refugees. The section on political resources includes links to official websites of the Nepalese government and the Supreme Court of Nepal, as well as links to the websites of other political actors.
A recent addition to the Resources section is a timeline constructed by the CPI research team covering events in Nepal since January 2001. Click here to access the timeline.
